Ziegenrück Hydropower Museum
Ziegenrück Hydropower Museum
In the today under monument protection Hydroelectric power station in Ziegenrück, visitors can experience how electricity has been generated from hydropower for over 100 years. The "Fernmühle" is today in the process of Museum which is presented in the impressive exhibition "Saale cascade" a 26 m² relief model and models of the five dams of the upper Saale. From the water scoop wheel to the drive of grain mills, saw and hammer mills, wire mills or pumps, the water wheel developed into the most widespread driving machine of the emerging crafts.
However, as an important impetus for technical development, the waterwheel ultimately had to give way to the steam engine, the turbine and the generator.
In Ziegenrück, water power has been used in the long-distance mill since 1258. For a long time, up to 8 water mills shaped the image of the town.
In the second exhibition "Craft & hydropower" The museum also explains the craft techniques of the past with functional models. Visitors can also find out about rafting and fishing in the Saale.
The two main exhibitions are complemented by exhibits and explanations on the history of the town, the geology of the upper Saale and historical diving technology. Constantly changing special exhibitions expand knowledge on the subject of "Water & Energy".
Also the Outdoor area has a lot to offer: In addition to a collection of turbines and waterwheels, there is also a model waterwheel installation on display. A visitor's turbine chamber, hydraulic ram, bakehouse and an inhabited mouse mill complete the outdoor area and make a visit to the hydropower museum (open all year round) a highlight for curious visitors from near and far.
