Kyffhäuserland OT Göllingen
The district of Göllingen in the municipality of Kyffhäuserland is located on the arm of the Wipper river, which separates the Windleite and Hainleite mountain ranges. A special gem is hidden here - the remains of the former Romanesque monastery of St. Wigbert. The octagonal, four-storey monastery tower with a crypt worth seeing is impressive and can be visited by visitors. The bell tower with Moorish-Byzantine elements is a true architectural rarity in these latitudes. Not far from the former Göllingen railroad station is the junction of the Kleine Wipper, an artificial river course, where the branch of the river disappears into the Hanfenberg and flows a good 500 meters through a tunnel towards Bendeleben. This technical masterpiece was built at the beginning of the 15th century by the Benedictine monks and supplied the salt boilers in nearby Frankenhausen. Hikers can experience these historic structures on a 15 km trail from Göllingen via Bendeleben and the Barbarossa Cave to Bad Frankenhausen.
