Worbis - The half-timbered town
Worbis - The half-timbered town
The district of Worbis is located in a valley bordered by the heights of the Kliens and Ohmgebirge mountains.
The highest elevations of the Ohm Mountains rise to 535 meters. A watershed between the Elbe and Weser rivers separates the headwaters of the Hahle (to the Weser) and the Wipper (to the Elbe).
With around 4700 inhabitants, Worbis is the second largest district of the town of Leinefelde-Worbis.
The origins of Worbis lie in a Slavic (Wendish) settlement. The economic development of the town was favored by its location on the old trade route and later military road. It connected Mühlhausen in northern Thuringia with Lower Saxony and Westphalia.
The Counts of Beichlingen elevated the town, first mentioned in documents in 1162, to the status of a town as early as 1255. Today, Worbis is a member of the German Half-Timbered Road. If you take a look at the historic town center of Worbis, you will notice the many beautiful half-timbered buildings. Most of them date from the Baroque to Biedermeier periods, but some of the half-timbered buildings are much older. For example, the remarkable Amtshaus or Rentamt, built on the foundations of the moated castle, dates back to 1575 and today houses parts of the town administration.
The monastery church "St. Antonius", built between 1670 and 1677, is one of the most beautiful churches in the Eichsfeld and belongs to the former Franciscan monastery, which is being converted into the new seat of the Leinefelde-Worbis town council.
The Bear Mile runs through Worbis town center. Here, children are invited to discover Worbis and learn about bears, their diet, the bear as a symbolic animal and Native Americans. The Bear Mile refers to the Alternative Bear Park, which was created on the outskirts of the town to replace the former zoo.
