Princely Worlds of Experience Schwarzburg Castle - Princely Armory and Imperial Hall
Schwarzburg Castle - the ancestral castle, hunting lodge and summer residence of the Counts of Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt - lies high above the Schwarzatal valley, surrounded by wooded mountains. The newly built gatehouse has been welcoming visitors since May 2018, while the princely weapons collection is on display in the renovated armory. In addition, the Imperial Hall at the end of the castle grounds with its baroque garden parterre invites visitors to take a tour.
The princely weapons collection in the armory
Since 2007, the former armory to the north of the complex has been extensively renovated. In May 2018, the unique weapons collection of the Schwarzburg aristocratic family returned to its historical home. Following the old model, the princely display collection shows around 5,000 original weapons, armor and trophies. The armory is the only preserved free-standing one in Germany.
The ancestral gallery in the Kaisersaal
Today you can visit the former orangery with the imperial hall and the garden parterre in front of it. The picture gallery of the once 48 life-size depictions of medieval emperors and kings as well as the 100 imperial medallions give an idea of the original splendor of the complex.
From a noble residence to a ruin
The main building has a turbulent history. This is why the former princely residence is currently undergoing extensive construction work. As part of the IBA project (International Building Exhibition Thuringia), parts of the castle are to be explored as a trail in 2021.
