Bad Blankenburg Town Hall
Bad Blankenburg Town Hall
Bad Blankenburg's mint was located in the town hall area. According to a building researcher, the mint of Count Heinrich I von Schwarzburg 1160-1184 is said to have been in this area.
The sandstone walls on the first floor were built between the 13th and 15th centuries. When the town lost its charter in 1525, it also lost its right to mint coins.
In the great town fire that raged in Bad Blankenburg in 1744, almost the entire town, including the town hall, was destroyed. This burned down to its foundations. The town hall was then completely rebuilt between 1744 and 1750.
In 1840, Friedrich Fröbel founded the first German kindergarten in the town hall (Fröbelsaal).
The complete renovation of the town hall began in 1995 and lasted until 1998. The task of renovating the historic town hall consisted of uncovering the historic building, renovating it structurally and returning it to use as an administrative building.
The glass floor in the foyer
A special feature is the glass floor. A well was uncovered during the renovation work. Further careful uncovering of the entrance area and the staircase revealed that there was a well-preserved pavement and foundations of old buildings in this area. In order to maintain a level floor, parts of the find were placed under glass to keep them visible. Building history investigations revealed that the wall to the west is still below the paving and is therefore the oldest part of the town hall. The west wall was uncovered in the foyer area on the first floor, grouted and left unplastered in order to draw attention to the connection with the floor finds under the glass. A construction window was left unplastered to document the techniques used in the various construction phases.
The town hall houses the cabinet of honorary citizens, the municipal library and the residents' registration office.
