Rauenstein

The village Rauenstein, belonging to the municipality Frankenblick is romantically embedded in a valley, framed by over 800m high densely forested mountains on the southern slope of the Thuringian Forest. The unique landscape between Coburg and the most famous hiking trail of Thuringia, the Rennsteig, convinces already in the first hours.

The landmark of the village is the castle ruin "Rauenstein", which was completely destroyed in the 30-year war except for a few wall remains. Directly in front of it is the St. Marien Georg Church, which was at the same time the local, castle and funeral church of the Lords of Schaumberg.

The porcelain industry settled in Rauenstein in 1784. The high utility properties of Rauenstein porcelain made it known and popular worldwide. The history of the porcelain industry is presented in the museum Neues Schloss Rauenstein, many beautiful exhibits make collectors' hearts beat faster. Especially well known is the company "Schildkröt". The popular "Schildkröt dolls" can also be admired in the Museum Neues Schloss Rauenstein.

Hiking and biking trails invite you to explore the region around Rauenstein. Wonderful distant views will inspire you on your tours. During hikes up to the nearby Rennsteig or into the foothills of the Thuringian Forest you will find rest and relaxation. Hiking, biking and in winter extensive cross-country skiing and winter hiking trails through a wonderfully snow-covered winter landscape guarantee a varied stay. Also worthwhile in summer is a visit to the "Zinselhöhle", the only natural stalactite cave in southern Thuringia, in the neighboring village of Meschenbach.
