Rohrborn
Rohrborn
Rohrborn is located south-east of Sömmerda at an altitude of 165 m above sea level and, with 231 inhabitants, is one of the town's smaller districts. Rural Rohrborn also offers good conditions with the residential area on the western edge of the village. Around 30 new houses have now been built here.
The village center is characterized by many old trees and greenery. One of the few woad mills in Thuringia still in its original condition is located here, and the people of Rohrborn are particularly proud of it. This is why the Waidmühlenfest is celebrated every year at the end of August, attracting many visitors from the region. This is when you can experience the Waidmühle in action. The association "Rohrborner Dorfgemeinschaft" e. V. also cultivates the tradition of woad cultivation.
Another place of interest is the very old Romanesque church "St. Michael" with its restored altar and the rare free-standing baptismal font. The famous pedagogue Christian Gotthilf Salzmann, who was born in Sömmerda, also preached here from 1768 to 1772.
The former "Zur Waidmühle" restaurant, which has been converted into a village community center, is a meeting point for the people of Rohrborn. The house is managed by the "Rohrborner Dorfgemeinschaft" e. V. association and can be used for meetings, events or private celebrations.
The area around Rohrborn is characterized by agriculture. There are also some smaller lakes. These are former flooded open-cast mines for clay extraction. The clay was once used to supply the "Martini" brickworks in Sömmerda.
