The Great Pond in Altenburg with its pond promenade welcomes you in a picturesque green setting. A landmark of the town is the famous Island Zoo on the island built in the 18th century. Originally, there was a large pond complex dating back to the 12th century, which was formed from the large and small ponds. It was not until around 300 years later that a dam was built to separate the two ponds. The large pond itself has an area of 10 hectares. It was mainly used for fish farming and may also have supported the defense of the southern city wall. Its importance as a recreational area came later and continues to this day. For Altenburgers and visitors to the town, the large pond is a popular place to go for walks, sporting activities or, in summer, for a homemade Italian ice cream on the pond terrace.
