The tea house was built together with the neighboring orangery between 1706 and 1712 under Duke Frederick II of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg in the Altenburg palace garden. This was done in connection with the creation of a new French Baroque garden in the previously neglected palace gardens. The teahouse hall has been used for events again since 2012, and the orangery houses a seasonal café.
