The town cemetery established in 1802 in front of the outer Neupfortentor gate gradually replaced the older churchyards. Its location between gardens allowed the cemetery to be steadily expanded over the decades. The cemetery was closed in 1927 when there were no more plots available. In spite of the applicable burial periods, the cemetery was abandoned and partially built on in the 1970s. A few gravestone monuments, the caretaker's house, the mourning chapel and the Jewish cemetery remain from the old cemetery.
