Castle of the Teutonic Order Münnerstadt

The former Commandery of the Teutonic Order, often referred to as the Teutonic Order Castle is one of the defining buildings in the historic old town of Münnerstadt. The enclosed complex on a pentagonal ground plan dates back to the 13th century. In the course of the expansion of Münnerstadt into a town by the Counts of Henneberg, the Teutonic Order was brought into the town around 1230 to take over the pastoral care of the town parish. The Teutonic Knights were given the area north of the parish church for their settlement. Over the centuries, the complex as it is today was built here. The most recent sections were built in the 18th century, in the Baroque period, but the overall impression of the building is dominated by Renaissance forms. Outstanding features in the idyllic inner courtyard include the magnificent portal of the stair tower, which was created in 1611 by the sculptor Julius Emes, as well as the graceful stander from 1621. There are also relief panels on the walls with inscriptions on the individual construction phases and the coats of arms of the respective commanderies (heads of the commandery) and provincial commanderies (provincial heads) under whom the construction work took place.

The Kommende included farm buildings such as the „Amtsverweserei“, stables, a mill, a brewery and others on neighboring properties

After the Teutonic Order was dissolved in the course of secularization in 1806, the building fell to the Bavarian state, which used it as a rent office (equivalent to today's tax office) until 1928. After various interim uses, the building was handed over to the town of Münnerstadt, which housed the municipal Henneberg Museum here in 1970.

In the 1990s, the decision was made to extensively renovate the Deutschordensschloss, which was largely completed in 2004. Since then, the castle has once again been an eye-catcher in the impressive ensemble of Münnerstadt's old town and a worthy home for the Henneberg Museum and the tourist information office. The town's wedding room has also found its place here. In the summer months, the inner courtyard is used for cultural events and festivities. As an additional attraction, the Byzantine chapel „St. John the Baptist“ with numerous valuable icons was set up in one of the first floor rooms in 2005. Services are occasionally held here in the rite of the Eastern Church.
