St. John's Castle Kühndorf
St. John's Castle Kühndorf
The Johanniterburg - the landmark of Kühndorf - is the former residence of the Lords of Kühndorf, first mentioned in documents in 1137, and was owned by the Counts of Henneberg around the middle of the 13th century. The castle was built by the Order of St. John in 1315 on the remains of a previous castle and has retained the character of a late Gothic defensive structure to this day. In the 16th century, witch trials were sometimes held here. The courtroom with its chopping block can still be admired today. The castle has been owned by the von Eichborn family since 1991. Today, the castle is privately inhabited by the family and specializes in hosting weddings and other family celebrations in the historic halls. Guided tours only March to October every Friday at 11:00 am and 2:00 pm and for groups of 15 or more on request. A coffee break or snack can also be booked in conjunction with a guided tour.
