Lutterfall Großbartloff

The Lutter waterfall near Großbartloff

The Luttertal valley around Großbartloff is filled with younger freshwater limestones. These are solid travertines or loose calcareous sands. These rocks were formed around 5000 - 10000 years ago.

Some incrusted plant remains can be seen on the travertines. Lime sands were transported by flowing water and partially redeposited.

The approx. 10 m high steep face of the natural waterfall consists of solid travertine. The water of the Lutter is enriched with carbonates and sulphates due to its origin in shell limestone. Even today, small amounts of freshwater limestone can still form. The swirling of the water contributes to self-purification.

A gorge-like depression below the waterfall is the habitat of various bird species, such as the dipper, wren and grey wagtail.
