Tautenburg castle ruins

The ruins of Tautenburg Castle, 272 m above sea level, are believed to date back to the 12th century. It was first mentioned in a document in 1223. For a long time, it was the center of a large economic and administrative area and also the electoral seat. After a devastating fire in 1780, the castle was demolished and used as building material for the new judicial and rent office in Frauenprießnitz. Only the keep can still be seen today, as the only landmark of Tautenburg's ancient history that can be seen from afar. The castle ruins are a popular hiking destination and are located on the SaaleHorizontale quality hiking trail, which was voted "Germany's most beautiful hiking trail" in the category of multi-day tours in 2023.

The planet trail runs around Tautenburg. Over a length of ten kilometers, you embark on a hike through our planetary system. Sculptures with information about the celestial bodies have been erected at a distance to scale. The state observatory in Tautenburg offers public guided tours once a month.

Along the hiking trails and at the ruins, benches and stools offer the opportunity to take a break and enjoy the scenery.
