The Geraaue forms part of the "Northern Geraaue", which in Erfurt refers to a large number of adjoining parks. The section known as the Geraaue comprises the park area between the Straße der Nationen and the Zittauer Straße business park and, at around 22 hectares, forms the largest area of green spaces meandering along the Gera.

As part of the 2021 Federal Garden Show, the entire area was redesigned and now offers a wealth of inviting recreational and sports facilities for all ages. Facilities such as the baseball field and the gymnasium in the northern area already existed, but have been made more attractive and integrated into the surroundings. The southern area was completely redesigned with the floodplain pond, a water treading pool and a number of playgrounds.

Today, the Geraaue is one of Erfurt's most popular recreational areas.
