Ratsbrauerei Weißensee

The first German municipal beer purity law was laid down in 1434 in the Thuringian town of Weißensee. In the "Stat Book" of 1434, a "Statuta thaberna" was discovered, which summarizes the laws on conduct in taverns and the brewing of beer. It reads: "To brew beer, one should ... add nothing other than hops, malt and water ('hophin malcz und wasser')."

This means that the oldest municipal beer brewing purity law still in force in Germany today comes from Thuringia! Since 2000, this old tradition has been revived in the historic location of the Weißensee town hall brewery.

The Romanesque town hall in Weißensee is home to a small private brewery. Visitors can enjoy the "Weißenseer Ratsbräu" in an atmospheric setting and learn interesting facts about the art of brewing beer from brewer Matthias Schrot.

Since its discovery in 1998, the "Weißensee Beer Festival" has been celebrated every year in Weißensee to commemorate the 1434 Purity Law on beer brewing.

In the brewery or in the cozy beer garden you can enjoy the high-quality "Weißenseer Ratsbräu" in peace and quiet.
