The ascent to the Inselsberg is via the L1024 between Bad Tabarz and Brotterode. In the area of the "Grenzwiese" ridge parking lot, a small paved road branches off to the mountain. A paved hiking trail leads from the parking lot at Grenzwiese to the Großer Inselsberg. There is a small stair path in this area. However, this mountain path can be bypassed on the paved hiking trail. The last section to the summit area is then covered on the paved summit road. The ascent from Grenzwiese is around 1.5 km long with a difference in altitude of around 200 meters and ends on the 916.5 m high Inselsberg.
