The Rockenstein is a foothill of the Himmeldunkberg. 

Himmeldunkberg

Himmeldunkberg, consisting of basalt and tuff, is located in the south-western part of the Lange Rhön, which is part of the Hohe Rhön, and is 888 m high. The village of Oberweißenbrunn lies 2 km to the south, Bischofsheim 4 km to the south-east and Gersfeld 3 km to the north-west. 

The former border between the Kingdom of Bavaria and the Kingdom of Prussia runs across the mountain. The boundary stones set in 1872 bear witness to this.

The Rhine-Weser watershed, the border between Bavaria and Hesse and the Rhönhöhenweg trail run across the summit of the Himmeldunkberg and the neighboring Hohe Hölle. The mountain is located in the nature reserve of the same name. The northern slope falls steeply and is covered in mixed deciduous forest. The south-west to east slope is unwooded. Grasses, silver thistles, bluebells and shrubs such as rose hips and sloes grow here. The summit is open and padded with the characteristic Rhön bristlegrass.

The Himmeldunkberg is important for model gliding and used to be used by hang-gliders and paragliders. The Würzburger Hütte (self-catering) is located at an altitude of 835 m on the western slope. As you climb up the mountain, you can see medieval fields on the flat slopes (Hochäcker). About 50 m south of the summit is the natural monument of the witches' beech. From the summit, you have a magnificent view of the Kreuzberg, the Black Mountains, the Dammersfeldrhön and the Brend and upper Sinn valleys. From the north-eastern flank, you can also see the Heidelstein. 

The mountain is located on the premium hiking trail "THE HOCHRHÖNER".
