This is the start of the 168 km long Rennsteig trail. The start is in Hörschel above the mouth where the Hörsel flows into the Werra.

Before the hiker sets off on his journey from Hörschel, he should keep an old tradition alive: "Wanderer stop. Carry a stone to the Saale, according to old custom, please!" A jar with stones and more information about the Rennsteig can be found at the start of the Rennsteig in Hörschel.

To make the start of the Rennsteig interesting not only for adults, a play and adventure world was also created for the little ones around 300 m from the start of the Rennsteig. An oversized Rennsteig shoe with lots of things to discover was erected for this purpose. Young hikers can play both indoors and outdoors and a slide provides the right momentum. The hiking shoe with integrated slide was specially developed for the Rennsteig. This design element can also be found in Blankenstein, Neuhaus and Oberhof.
