Lösershag natural forest reserve

The Lösershag has not been used by humans for half a century and has now developed into a primeval forest. The "Lösershag" natural forest reserve is therefore one of the most important core zones in the UNESCO Rhön Biosphere Reserve and is specially protected. At Lösershag, a characteristic volcanic cone, the typical Rhön rock can be found in large clusters of coarse boulders, the so-called basalt boulder fields. The classic boulder forest, consisting of ash, wych elm, linden, sycamore maple and Norway maple, grows here on the summit area and upper slope on boulder-covered soils. The majority of these trees are 160 - 200 years old. Otherwise, beech dominates the forest landscape at "Lösershag". The "Lösershag" natural forest reserve is rich in deadwood and hollow trees, a characteristic of the primeval forest, which are indispensable habitats for a large number of mostly very rare animal and plant species.

An educational trail leads through the "Lösershag" natural forest reserve. Here you will find a variety of flora and fauna (including trollflower, black stork, red kite, silver thistle)

The natural forest reserve is located on the premium hiking trail Extra tour "Basalt Trail.
