The Schafstein with a height of 832 m is one of the local mountains of the Ehrenberg (Rhön) community. Its mighty basalt block seas, which characterize the northern and southern slopes, are among the most impressive in all of Central Europe. On the northern edge, a magnificent view opens up in the direction of Milseburg, and on the southern edge you can look far into the Ulster Valley.

Together with the old, natural tree stands on the summit plateau, the Schafstein is an outstanding nature reserve of 127 hectares in size as a habitat for rare species. Of these, 77 hectares at an altitude of 700 to 800 meters are designated as the "core zone" of the Rhön Biosphere Reserve.

In 1992, forest management around the Schafstein was discontinued. At that time, some of the trees were already up to 140 years old. Now the character of the forest is primeval. Rare mosses, lichens and plants can be found here. The dead trees and the lying dead wood are welcome homes for many insects and cavity nesting birds.
