High Schrecke

Old forest with a new future - that is the motto of the Hohe Schrecke. After decades of military use, an extensive wilderness area has developed in the virtually uncut forest area in the north of Thuringia. Conservationists are now preserving this treasure and have discovered several primeval forest relict species here - for example beetles, which are evidence of a particularly long forest tradition. The Hohe Schrecke is also home to all the forest bat species native to Thuringia - around 600 bats have been counted in the trunk of a single beech tree. A record! In a large-scale nature conservation project, municipalities and nature conservation organizations are working together to keep this old forest as it is. Humans no longer intervene in part of the Hohe Schrecke. In this species-rich, unspoiled deciduous forest, huge centuries-old beech and oak trees line the paths and many rare plants and animals live here. Nature lovers can best discover the Hohe Schrecke on foot along themed trails or on two wheels. A special hiking destination is the new suspension rope bridge, which spans the Bärental valley from 180 meters. From here, the primeval forest of the Hohe Schrecke can be explored further.
