Steinkopf nature reserve - core zone of the Rhön biosphere reserve
Steinkopf nature reserve - core zone of the Rhön biosphere reserve
The Steinkopf, with an altitude of 888 m, is one of the local mountains of the municipality of Ehrenberg (Rhön). The Steinkopf combines basalt rocks, boulder slopes and beech forest, surrounded by damp and meagre mountain meadows, which are used as high pasture by the Rhön Biosphere Cattle Association. The Steinkopf is an insider tip for hikers and other nature lovers. As a habitat for many rare species - plants, birds and insects - the Steinkopf is considered one of the most ecologically valuable areas in the Rhön biosphere reserve and is protected as a core zone.
Shortly before you reach the Hochrhön road at Schornhecke from Wüstensachsen, you can see the striking cone of the Steinkopf towering above you on the left. It can be reached via circular hiking trail 10.
