The FFH area "An den Ziegenböcken" is located in the north-east of Thuringia in the Saale-Holzland district. It covers an area of 411.480 ha. The area is intersected by the A9 motorway, which runs in a north-south direction. The maximum north-south extension is just under 4 km, the east-west extension approx. 3.5 km. In the southeast, the protected area extends as far as the town of Bad Klosterlausnitz, while Eisenberg is around 3 km away to the northeast and the municipality of Hainspitz to the north. The northern area runs as a mostly narrow band for 2.2 km to the east along the highway. The Klausnitzer Moor (also known as "Roter Pfützensumpf") in the central part of the FFH area, which is the largest transitional moor in eastern Thuringia, is particularly striking.
