Windheim

Windheim, the most westerly of Münnerstadt's districts, is situated in a very idyllic location away from all traffic routes on the western edge of the Quästenberg, a wooded hill above the Saale valley. The small village first appears in a document from 1243, when Count Hermann von Henneberg pledged goods to the Prince-Bishop of Würzburg. However, like other settlements with the same or similar names, the place name refers to Slavic immigrants from the 9th century. Before the beginning of its historical appearance, Windheim was a Zinsdorf of the Deutschordenshaus Münnerstadt, whose basic facilities seem to have included a rampart with gates, church and churchyard. The miraculous image of the seated Madonna and Child from around 1340 is probably the oldest inventory of the former Steinach branch church, which was rebuilt in its present form around 1820 while retaining old building elements and has been the destination of numerous pilgrimages since the middle of the 18th century. Since its municipal affiliation to Münnerstadt in 1972, Windheim, like other formerly independent municipalities, has experienced a continuous, albeit cautious, upswing. The development of new building areas in particular has contributed to the further development of the village. As the western outpost of Münnerstadt, Windheim still has some special features: it is the only district connected to the Main-Rhön Group's long-distance water supply and has its own independent sewage treatment plant in the form of an earth basin. Windheim is the only district that has never transferred its cemetery from the care of its own church to municipal management, although it is still waiting for the realization of a burial hall. While the pre-school children attend the kindergarten in Reichenbach, the schoolchildren are driven to Münnerstadt every day. The former school building, a postwar construction project that was not particularly solid, was demolished to make way for a smart clubhouse for the local soccer club. Windheim is a popular hiking destination for spa guests from Bad Bocklet. For many senior citizens in need of care, the "Haus der Familie" has become the last home of their lives since the 1980s.
