Unterweißbach is an idyllic resort town. It extends at a distance of about 13 km north of the Rennsteig in the valleys of the Weißbach, the Lichte and the Schwarza, away from the large towns and long-distance roads in the Thuringian Slate Mountains. The municipality is framed by the forested mountains rising up to 710 m. The highest elevation is the Quittelsberg. Unterweißbach is mentioned for the first time in 1394 in the inheritance register.
