Böhlscheiben

Böhlscheiben district of Bad Blankenburg
(incorporated 1992)
Idyllically situated high above the Schwarzatal (479 m above sea level), Böhlscheiben is the starting point for many hikes, whether to the Griesbachfelsen, Teufelstreppe, nature conservation station "Dr. Helmut Steuer" or to the Fürstenstand, directly on the nature trail "Heinrich Cotta" and the Olitätenweg.
The name is probably based on the German term "bühl" (hill) and a "disk"-like plateau and was first mentioned in the 14th century.
Together with Watzdorf, Böhlscheiben appears in the annals as an old mining village. Towards the end of the 18th century, however, the mining of copper, cobalt and iron ore also came to a standstill here; at the same time, slate mining experienced an upswing.
