Goessnitz

The small town of Gößnitz, which is the local authority for Ponitz and Heyersdorf, has around 3,400 inhabitants. Gößnitz was first mentioned in a document on August 17, 1253 and was granted its town charter on March 18, 1718. Another interesting fact: at 610 meters, Gößnitz is home to the longest covered platform in Germany. This is where the north-south main line Berlin-Leipzig-Altenburg-Hof-Munich and the west-east main line Frankfurt-Erfurt-Gößnitz-Dresden meet. Gößnitz also has something to offer in terms of culture. The Winkelhof, for example, which is a listed building, has served as a museum of local history since 1999. The extensive collection on display there can be viewed on Saturdays and Sundays from May to October and by appointment. The cabaret "Die Nörgelsäcke" is known beyond the district's borders.

The so-called "large school" was converted into a residential building by the municipal housing association, and the "small school" was also given new users. The municipal library moved into the first floor in 1996. After further conversion work, the KulturCentrum Gößnitz was finally created. On the first floor, two former classrooms were converted into a hall with approx. 100 seats for concerts and other events. Clubs can use several rooms on the second floor. The top floor was handed over to the Johann Friedrich Agricola Music School, Gößnitz branch. The former gymnasium next to the town hall was converted into a town hall and inaugurated in 2001. From 2002 to 2003, Freiheitsplatz was completely redesigned and officially opened on August 28, 2003, just in time for the 750th anniversary of the first documentary mention of Gößnitz and 285 years of the town charter. After three years of construction work on the roof and façade, the town church of St. Annen shines again in new splendor.
