Engerda

The largest village in Hexengrund (314m above sea level, population 315) was first mentioned in a document in 876 as "Ingridi item Ingridi", making it the oldest part of the municipality alongside Heilingen.

The landmark of Engerda is the lime tree that stands above the village on the road to Schmieden. An old stone cross can also be found there. The church, mentioned in 1194 as St. Michael's, has undergone many changes. The entrance and a Romanesque arched window still remain from the 12th century. The main focal point when entering the church is the chancel, which was separated from the nave by a pointed arch around 1350. It contains one of the most magnificent winged altars from the medieval Saalfeld workshops. The old Thingstein is located in the immediate vicinity of the church wall.

Engerda originally had two courthouses - next to the church for the lower village and on the village green above the lime tree for the upper village.

Brass music is cultivated in the village. The carnival club, shooting club and bowling club are also very attractive.

The "Hexengrundknirpse" daycare center is also attended by children from neighboring villages.
