Behrungen is located in the floodplain of the "Bahra" stream, on the south-western border of the district of Schmalkalden-Meiningen, approx. 25 km south of Meiningen, 11 km from Römhild, 9 km from Mellrichstadt and 20 km from Bad Königshofen. The village was first mentioned under the name "Villa Pahringe" in 795.

The many beautiful and well-preserved half-timbered houses give the village center a special character. The church, town hall and school (former office building of the Behrungen winery) set special accents. The entire village center and the village complex within an accessible circular route are listed buildings. Behrungen, which was located in the border area of the former GDR, directly on the German-German border, still has architectural witnesses today, such as a border tower, a section of border fence and a wooden barrack that served as accommodation for the border police. In the seclusion of the border strip, valuable biotopes have been preserved in which a large number of endangered animal and plant species have been able to survive. The "Seeben" nature reserve, with its various vegetation structures and diversity of species, is of importance far beyond the boundaries of the district.

Horses have been bred in Behrungen for years. The "Eschenhof" stud farm is not only interesting for buyers and breeders, but also offers a varied program for locals and visitors. A diverse range of clubs helps to preserve the cultural heritage and offers numerous cultural highlights. The village's Heimatstube, with its exhibits from "grandma's times", not only provides interesting insights into village life in the past, but also teaches visitors about the local wildlife through a taxidermy exhibition. In 1993, Behrungen was the state winner of the Free State of Thuringia in the competition "Our village should become more beautiful" and came second in the national competition in 1995.

The district of Behrungen has 555 inhabitants and a district area of 1382 ha.
