Holungen

Holungen is a village of Lower Eichsfeld in northwestern Thuringia (Germany). It is one of the medium-sized villages in the Eichsfeld district. Since December 1, 2011, the formerly independent community is a district of the rural municipality Sonnenstein.

Holungen lies at the foot of the Sonnenstein in a basin open to the east and is surrounded by a landscape rich in contrasts. Thus, on the one hand, one encounters secluded forests of the Ohm Mountains and, on the other hand, the mighty reddish-brown slagheaps of the former potash mining. The village is characterized by beautiful half-timbered houses, a well-kept church as well as by tradition-conscious and tradition-maintaining inhabitants.

Famous personalities had their roots in Holungen, such as the poet of the well-known Eichsfeldlied Dr. Hermann Iseke as well as the physicist and astronomer Anton Thraen. In former times the secondary trade road Halle - Nordhausen - Duderstadt - Göttingen - Kassel led through the village. The designation of the landscape incision between Sonnenstein and Ohm Mountains as "Porta Eichsfeldica", the so-called "Eichsfeld'sche Tor", results from this time.
