The municipality of Geratal, formed by the voluntary merger of the municipalities of Gräfenroda, Geraberg, Geschwenda, Gossel, Liebenstein and Frankenhain, was approved by the Thuringian Act on the Voluntary Reorganization of Municipalities in 2019 (ThürGNGG 2019) of 18 December 2018 § 12. The new municipality of Geratal thus formed as of 01.01.2019 belongs to the Ilm district of the Free State of Thuringia. The district seat is the town of Arnstadt.

The area of the municipality offers many wooded mountains and valleys in the heart of Thuringia. Gräfenroda, situated on the north-eastern slope of the Thuringian Forest, is crossed by the wild Gera river, as is Liebenstein - the smallest district of our municipality. The villages of Geraberg and Geschwenda are surrounded by untouched nature, fields and meadows with a variety of protected plants. Geraberg lies on the tame Gera. Gossel is a traditional, non-industrial village that stands on a shell limestone plateau and is therefore visible from afar. Frankenhain lies in a valley basin and is therefore protected from the harsh north and east winds.
