When the Municipalities Reorganization Act came into force in 1997, the unified municipality named "Krölpa" was formed from the surrounding villages. It currently has around 2800 inhabitants and is one of the largest municipalities in the Saale-Orla district with the districts of Friedebach, Gräfendorf, Dobian, Herschdorf, Hütten, Krölpa, Oelsen, Rockendorf, Trannroda and Zella. The municipality covers a total area of 42.23 km².
