Close to the butt

With about 1500 inhabitants, the Schleusinger district Hinternah is one of the largest districts.

Hinternah was first mentioned as a village in the county of Henneberg in 1189.

The village is located around 400 - 450 m above sea level in the south of the Thuringian Forest Nature Park, approx. 10 km from the Rennsteig. Hinternah is conveniently located on the B4 federal highway and the Schleusingen junction of the A73 motorway is approx. 2 km away. The Themar-Ilmenau railroad line has been operated with a steam locomotive as a traditional line since summer 2004.

In the direction of Schleusingen, we recommend a walk along the moat or town moat, which is a special hydraulic engineering monument dating back to 1353. This was built with a very slight gradient of 1.30 m over a length of almost 4 km by monks in ancient times.

Other sights in Hinternah include the only intact village mill from 1575 and a late Gothic Protestant church with a crucifixion group from the Franconian carving school of the Riehmenschneider period from 1614.

Historically, Hinternah is known as a wine handling center, woodworking, glassmaking and broom making village.
