Probstzella

With its 18 districts, the unified municipality of Probstzella is idyllically nestled between the three nature parks of the Thuringian Slate Mountains/Upper Saale, Franconian Forest and Thuringian Forest. The Loquitz forms a particularly narrow valley here with green meadows and breathtaking views from the surrounding mountains of the low mountain range. The course of the river is followed by the Loquitz cycle path, the federal highway 85 and the railroad line between Nuremberg and Leipzig, making the municipality easily accessible for short trips and vacationers. A variety of tourist attractions in the region invite you to linger. Along the Beer and Castle Route, the Slate Route and the Porcelain Route, you will find typical regional attractions such as the technical monument at the slate mine in Lehesten, the Slate Museum in Ludwigsstadt, the porcelain factories in Tettau and Gräfenthal, Lauenstein Castle and the nature park information point in Probstzella, as well as some surprising sights. In the slate-roofed idyll of Probstzella, the austere architecture of the Haus des Volkes in the center of the village seems almost unreal. The towering building complex with hotel, café and restaurant was built by industrial pioneer Franz Itting in 1927 and is the largest Bauhaus-era monument in Thuringia.

The region around Probstzella was particularly shaped by its location in the former border area of the GDR. The border station in Probstzella, a museum-like observation tower on the Hopfberg and the "Green Belt" bear witness to this history. Anyone interested in finding out more can take part in a guided hike and a film screening (contact the tourist information office or Haus des Volkes). There are many beautiful hiking routes for hikers.
