Niedergrunstedt, located southwest in the Kirschbach Valley, is first mentioned in 1289. Five years later, the parish is founded. The church, a place of pilgrimage in the 14th century, was dedicated to St. Moritz. It received its present appearance in 1726. The paintings, which have been preserved true to the original, were done by the Weimar court painter Ernst Rentzsch. The livelihood of the people of Niedergrunstedt was agriculture in medium and small farms. In the 16th century woad was cultivated. A noticeable development of the entire infrastructure began after 1990 and continued with the incorporation as a new district of Weimar in 1994.
