UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Thuringian Forest
In a wonderful location, between the legendary Rennsteig and the wild and romantic Schwarza Valley, lies on the border between the Thuringian Forest and the Thuringian Slate Mountains Altenfeld, the southernmost municipality of the Ilm district. Since 2019 the state recognized resort belonging to the rural municipality of Großbreitenbach.
Surrounded by forested mountains up to an altitude of 812 m and colorful forest meadows, the area around Altenfeld is one of the most most beautiful hiking areas in the middle Thuringian Forest and offers every nature lover the best recreational opportunities with its wonderful forest and mountain air. Numerous circular trails lead, for example, through the nearby Reischel Valley and across the Rennsteig to interesting vantage points. Especially the Haube (790 m) and the Rennsteigwarte on the Eselsberg (841 m) grant great panoramic views over the Thuringian Forest.
In the winter months guarantee groomed ski trails to and along the Rennsteig, groomed winter hiking trails, brisk downhill runs, a ski lift facility but also wonderful tobogganing meadows an unforgettable winter stay.
But Altenfeld has even more to offer. A small, beautifully situated Forest swimming pool offers pure cooling and swimming fun in summer. The impressive Music machine collection Eger fascinates with historical Exhibits from 1840 (lyre boxes, barrel organs and orchestrions) and the local Glass Museum provides information about Altenfeld's 360-year glass tradition. Art lovers will find in the Small gallery in the community center a delightful point of contact.
