Wutha-Farnroda

The municipality Wutha-Farnroda with its four districts is located about five kilometers east of the Wartburg city Eisenach. The municipality, beautifully situated in the Erbstrom and Hörsel valleys, lies at the foot of the Hörselberge mountains and not far from the Thuringian Forest with its famous Rennsteig high trail. In addition to the flora and fauna unique in Germany, the Hörsel Mountains are an integral part of the Germanic and Germanic world of legends and myths. They are said to have once been the home of Wotan, the wild army, of Frau Holle but also of Frau Venus with her famous lover and minnesinger Tannhäuser. Near the summit are the Venus Grotto and the Tannhäuser Cave, which are accessible from the ridge trail of the Great Hörselberg.

In the municipality there is much to discover besides the fabulous nature: The district of Farnroda is characterized by a historic village center. Next to the historic water tower from the 13th century is the castle park with playground. The Hörsel mill located in Schönau is a technical monument. In Kahlenberg there are several restored four-sided farmsteads, and a farmstead in the Burbach district has remains of a moat. Röbersche Park at the town hall is considered one of the most beautiful parks in the region. Like the two buildings of the city administration, it belonged until 1952 to the Röber family, owners of the special factory for cleaning and sorting machines opposite (today: Petkus Technologie GmbH).

The church and rectory in the Schönau district, together with the cemetery and other outbuildings, form a monument ensemble that today houses the Hörselberg Museum. With changing focal points, the museum shows the geology, fauna and flora of the Hörselberg region, explains the well-known Hörselberg caves and karst phenomena in the nature reserve, and is dedicated to the rich treasure of legends and myths of the six-square-meter mountain range.
