Kleinwelsbach

Kleinwelsbachwhich has the character of a mixed village area, is probably one of the smallest villages in the Unstrut-Hainich district. The current population is around 130 and the name of Kleinwelsbach has changed several times over the centuries. From Urbirwelsbach to Welspech, Welspechsuberior, Oberwelsbach and finally Klein-Welsbach. The first documented mention dates back to 1195, when Pope Cölestin III confirmed the possessions in the villages of Ober- and Niederwelsbach to the Germerode monastery, located in today's Werra-Meißner district in Hesse.

The church of St. Mauritius is located in the center of the village; the year 1691 can be read above the portal frame. The exact year the church was built is unknown.

On the "forgotten railroad line", the route of the Langensalzaer Kleinbahn, from Bad Langensalza to Kirchheilingen and Haussömmern, a new cycle and hiking path was built and the connection to the Unstrut cycle path was established.
