Birkungen is known for its nearby dam and offers numerous recreational opportunities, such as hikes to the remains of Birkenstein Castle along the Mühlenweg or a visit to the former Cistercian monastery Reifenstein - now a hospital. Of particular importance is the Way of the Cross, built in 1748, which leads to the chapel built in 1750 and tells of the life and death of Jesus in 14 stations. The village was first mentioned in a document in 1191.
