First mentioned in a document in 842, Dienstedt is the oldest village in the municipality and is one of the oldest villages in Thuringia. A special feature worth mentioning is the 500-year division of the village into 3 dominions until 1815. One part belonged to the Count of Hatzfeld, another to Saxe-Weimar and the third part to Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt. This division into three parts is depicted in the coat of arms, which shows three bailiffs fishing on an arched bridge.
