The Municipality of Oberstadt is a clustered village and was first mentioned in a document in 1317. It is located in the northern part of the district of Hildburghausen at the foot of the Thuringian Forest, 15 km southwest of Suhl and 7 km from Themar.

Oberstadt is 438 m above sea level. In the north-east of the town, the Questenberg rises 539 m above sea level and above it the 631 m high Galgenberg. Worth seeing are the Church, the former moated castle and the 200 year old dancing lime tree. In 2006, a memorial was dedicated to the head huntsman Johann Georg von Langen (1699 - 1776), who was born in Oberstadt Castle.

The area around the village is best explored on foot; the forest and hiking trails are well signposted. Popular excursion destinations are the Schneeberg (692 m above sea level), the trumpet oak and the Mining lodge "Lange Bahn".

Club and cultural life is characterized by the rifle guild, the fire department, the local heritage association and the fairground association. Annual cultural highlights are the Christmas market and the funfair. In addition to agriculture, there are several small businesses with a total of around 70 jobs.
