The district of Merkers lies to the south of the Werra. To the north rises the Krayenberg, an imposing mountain cone rising from the plain at an altitude of 431 NN. Merkers is now part of the Wartburg district in the state of Thuringia and is geographically located near the 10th parallel east longitude and 50.85 degrees north latitude. There are 12 listed monuments in Merkers. The Eisenach-Eisenacher Haus hiking trail and the "Werra from the source to the estuary" long-distance cycle route pass through the town. Andreas Fack, the poet of the Rhönlied, was born on March 1, 1863.
