Witterda is located 12 km north of Erfurt on the northern slope of the Fahner Höhe, a mountain range in the Thuringian Basin. If you take the road to Erfurt from Langensalza or Greußen, you will see the Catholic parish church of Witterda at a distance of 20-30 km before you see the village itself, which lies hidden in a slight dip in the ground. Halfway up the Fahner mountain range, its light-colored limestone walls with the eight-sided slate-roofed tower shine against the green of the trees and forest, as if it were standing in the forest itself. The Fahnersche Höhe is worth a visit at any time of year. A relatively new network of paths with corresponding signposts and markings invites you to go hiking.
