Weitersdorf
Weitersdorf
The village of Weitersdorf (330 m above sea level, 10 inhabitants), an old clearing settlement and former Kochberg outpost, was first mentioned in 1351 as Wybirstal.
Only remains of the manor building are still standing. The towerless Romanesque chapel in the north of Weitersdorf is a venerable testimony to the long history of the settlement. It was built as early as the 12th century as a mission church. Not far from the chapel is a strikingly large sandstone cross, which was probably more of a wayside shrine than a cross of atonement. The Thuringia Trail and the Luther Trail lead through Weitersdorf, as well as through Teichweiden and Großkochberg.
