Schierschwende

The once Protestant estate village of Schierschwende, first mentioned in the deserted village charter in 1390 and 1407 and later historically as a village around 1545, is located in an eastern side valley of the Haselbach at an altitude of approx. 399 m above sea level.

The village, which is now Catholic, covers an area of 447 hectares.

The Catholic church was built on the hill of the village in 1899.

The "Schönberg Estate", built around 1400 by Rudolf and Heinrich von Keudel, belongs to the village of Schierschwende. The former manor house houses a preceptory (youth welfare facility).

The farm was acquired by a new farmer. Today, piglets are reared there.

A 3.3 km hiking trail leads from the former "Gute Hoffnung" restaurant via Normannstein Castle to Treffurt.

On a hill 448 m above sea level, there are two very old lime trees on the "Lange Fiedel" hiking trail, surrounded by seating and a double shelter (barbecue hut). They invite you to linger and offer a beautiful view of the Werra Valley, the Inselsberg in the Thuringian Forest and Wartburg Castle near Eisenach. In 2013, two sculptures (corn drums and a table) were erected at "Guten Hoffnung" and Lindenhecke, which are part of the "X8 Natura" hiking trail. This section of the trail is the last to be dedicated to the theme of "Reunification". Due to the division of Germany, the Barbarossa Trail ended in Wanfried until 1989; the East German hiking route to the Kyffhäuser began in Treffurt. On this X8 hiking route, which was also active during the GDR era, the trail leads up to the heights above Normannstein Castle. Its open landscape offers incredible views to the west and east.
