The small district of Zimmern, with a population of around 307 (as at 31.12.2019), is located directly on the south-eastern foothills of the Hainich and was incorporated in 1994. Zimmern was first mentioned in 775.
The church was consecrated in 1700 and bears the name of St. Martin. The tower towers over the village, which is nestled in the valley of the Orbach and Craula streams. The Zimmerbach has its source in the village.
In memory of an incident from the Thirty Years' War - a soldier and a journeyman butcher killed each other in a fight - a butcher's axe and a dagger are depicted in the gable field of a house. 450 hectares of the Zimmern district lie within the Hainich National Park.
