Administrative community Oberes Sprottental

The administrative community of Oberes Sprottental is located in the south-western part of the Altenburger Land district on the border with the district of Greiz and the Free State of Saxony. It was founded in October 1994 by the municipalities of Heukewalde, Jonaswalde, Löbichau, Nöbdenitz, Posterstein, Thonhausen, Vollmershain and Wildenbörten. The municipalities of Nöbdenitz and Wildenbörten have no longer belonged to the VG since 01.01.2019 and have since become districts of the town of Schmölln.

Agriculture and uranium ore mining, which has now completely ceased, shaped the landscape in the past and were the main sources of income for the people in the region. Thanks to an excellent infrastructure, numerous companies settled in the commercial and industrial areas in the municipalities of Löbichau and Thonhausen.

The member communities are residential and recreational areas with a distinct rural tranquillity and idyllic atmosphere. Many classically laid out four-sided farmsteads with traditional half-timbered construction are typical of almost all districts in the administrative community. Löbichau Castle with its English-style garden and the castle and park grounds in Tannenfeld are just as much a magnet for visitors as the medieval Posterstein Castle from the 12th century.

Numerous clubs and cultural groups, such as the 1st Vollmershainer Schalmeienverein, make the region known beyond the district borders. A well-developed network of cycling and hiking trails connects all the region's highlights worth seeing from Wildenbörten to Thonhausen and runs alongside the Sprat Adventure Trail from Nöbdenitz to Posterstein.
