Günthersleben and Wechmar are located south-east of Gotha in the fertile glacial valley of the Apfelstädt at an altitude of 278 to 369 meters above sea level. A chronicle published by the municipality in 2001 is therefore entitled Im Tal des wilden Wassers (In the valley of wild water). The parts of the former municipality separated by the river are connected by a bridge.

Günthersleben and Wechmar are connected via the Gotha exit of the A4 highway. The districts have grown together structurally thanks to an industrial estate built in the 1990s.

Günthersleben-Wechmar bordered on the municipalities of Gotha, Drei Gleichen, Ohrdruf, Hohenkirchen and Schwabhausen. The municipality had 2999 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2016) living on 26.82 km².
