Gelmeroda (near Weimar)
The Weimar district of Gelmeroda is also known worldwide. The church, whose foundations probably date back to between 900 and 1100, was a favorite motif of Bauhaus artist Lyonel Feininger. The badly damaged building was reconstructed between 1979 and 1991. Due to its proximity to the Weimar exit of the A 4 federal highway, the Feininger Church was given the status of a highway church in 1994. The light sculpture erected during the City of Culture year has been a reminder of the painter's artistic views since 1999. The village has been documented as "Germenrode" since 1301.
